Abstract :Background: Adolescents have become quite vulnerable to various non-communicable
diseases (NCDs) like diabetes mellitus and hypertension, especially due to the tremendous
changesin their lifestyle overthe last few decades. Recentstatisticsindicaterisingprevalence
of these lifestyle diseases in developed as well as developing nations along with an earlier
onset, with younger populations being at increased risk. As health behavior may be
influenced by the level of awareness about diabetes and hypertension, a crosssectionalstudy
was designed to assessthe knowledge, attitude and practice of adolescentsresiding in Delhi
regarding diabetes and hypertension.
Methodology: One thousand and five adolescentsresiding in urban neighborhoods of central
Delhi were recruited for the study from January to December 2013 using interviewer
administered questionnaires designed to elicit socio-demographic information and
knowledge, attitude and practice of these adolescents towards diabetes and hypertension.
Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 16.
Results: Majority of subjects were not aware or gave wrong answer when asked what was
diabetes(85.6%) and hypertension (84.6%). Almost half ofthe subjects agreed that diabetes
and hypertension were serious illnesses (49.5% and 49.9%). 38.1% and 37.3% adolescents
agreed that effective management is possible for diabetes and hypertension respectively.
Regular exercise and balanced dietary pattern were followed by only 27.1% and 20.6% of
subjects. Knowledge of diabetes and hypertension wassignificantlyhigher amongadolescents
with higher level of education. |

Abstract :Adolescence is identified as the crucial period in human growth and development that is
sandwiched between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to19 years. It represents one of
the criticaltransitionsin the life span and is characterized by a tremendous pace in growth and
changes that is second to that of infancy. Teenage parents in developing countries are often
married in contrary to the developed world and their pregnancies may be welcomed by family
and society. However, in these societies, early pregnancy may combine with malnutrition and
poor health care which can cause medical problems. |

Attitudes and Experiences of Indian Youth regarding Romantic Relationships and Physical Intimacy |

Abstract :Introduction: Young population today is undergoing several transformations; the chances of
getting involved with opposite sex partner’s increase to a large extent particularly in urban
parts of the country.
Objectives: To examine the attitudes and perceptions of youth in India about romantic
relationships and physical intimacy.
Methodology: The present study used the data from the “Youth in India: Situation and Needs”
survey conducted during 2006-2007. This study covered six states namely Andhra Pradesh,
Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Bi-variant analysis is used to study
the attitudes and experiences of romantic relationships and physical intimacy of youth and
their background characteristics.
Results: This study found that majority (nearly one fourth) of the young people spent time
with friends of opposite sex. Almost half of the respondentsstated that they were engaged in
kissing before marriage. Though rural-urban difference is not much, it is slightly more among
rural youth, 47 percent of rural youth and 43 percent of urban youth had their first premarital
sexual experience when they were 15 to 18 years old.
Conclusions: Attitudes, perceptions and experiences of youth regarding romantic
relationships and physical intimacy are determined by the number of background
characteristics like age, sex, place of residence, religion, caste, education etc. Majority of the
young people spent time with the opposite sex friends, both in rural and urban areas. Those
who reported to have never spent time with friends of opposite sex is very few. |

Unsafe Sex-A Serious Concern among Underprivileged Youth in Delhi |

Abstract :Premarital sex in adolescence mainly involves high risk partners or multiple partners posing a
challenge to reproductive health and control of sexually transmitted infections & HIV/ AIDS.
Present study was carried out in a resettlement colony of East Delhi among unmarried males
of 15-24 years to find out their sexual habits and practices.
818 subjects were studied through surveying 50% of households in the colony. 58% of the
subjects did not have knowledge of unsafe sex. Almost 30% of the youth were engaged in
sexual intercourse. Mean age of first sexual exposure was 16.1 years (median-16 years).More
than three fourth of subjects who had history of sexual exposure were inconsistent in using of
condoms. |

Perceptions of Adolescent Boys regarding Adolescent Friendly Health Services-A Qualitative Approach in India |

Abstract :Adolescence is a transitory period between childhood and adulthood marked by mental
and physical changes. It is essential to furnish them with proper information during this
phase, in absence of which they can easily be misled and engage in unhealthy activities.
Our aim was to assess perceptions of adolescent boys on reproductive health and to
comprehend their unmet needs on Adolescent Friendly Health Services.
Study Design: This qualitative study was conducted using Focus Group Discussions (FGD) in
a rural-urban setting in Udupi. A convenient sample of 41 adolescent boys aged 13-15
years participated in four FGD. A pre-tested interviewer guide was used for data
collection. All tape-recorded data was fully transcribed and thematic analysis was done.
Results: Awareness, Knowledge and Perceptions were the outcome measures of our
study. Media, gadgets and peers played a pivotal role in their life. Negative influences like
“accessing pornographic content”, “substance use”, “social networking”, “wrong ideas
about girls”, “fall in love” were mainly highlighted by participants. Wet dreams and
masturbation were considered as problems. They were totally unaware of Reproductive
Health services. A demand was made for adolescent friendly services through medical
practitioners.

Abstract :Objectives: In the present scenario, as the society is influenced by modernization and
westernization, the path from adolescence to adulthood is endowed with stress. This is true,
especially in the case of adolescents in the middle income group families as they have to face
greater stress in the form of parental ambitions and highly competitive academic
environments. The objective of the current study is to assess the prevalence of stress and
stress causing factors among school adolescents of Delhi.
Methods: It is a cross-sectional study, conducted among the adolescents of conveniently
selected secondary schools from the central and eastern district of Delhi, India. Sampling
technique used in the study was simple random sampling and calculated sample size. The
study was conducted from January 2012 to March 2013. A pretested self administered
questionnaire was used for the data collection. Analysis was done using percentage, chisquare
test. |
